The Ten-Day Interview

6 questions with Wally's Will director, matteo mosterts at the half-way mark.
Saturday, August 5th, 2017
  1. 1 Hi Matteo! Thanks for being a part of our festival. First, what wast the initial seed that inspired you to make Wally's Will?
Wally's Will was my first short film, and what compelled me to make it was coming up with a story that no one else could tell. I knew the character and I couldn't wait to play with it.
  2. 2 Your film has a definite style to it. Some filmmakers try not to attract a strong signature on their films while others do. What are your thoughts on this?
I am trying to find my style, and my voice. In doing so I'm realizing that I love visual comedy. And not visual in terms of physical comedy but more in terms of visually curated comedy.
  3. 3 Your lead character, played by the wonderful Linda Gray talks to the audience directly. How did you decide to go that route and how long did it take you to complete this script?
Everything started with that opening monologue. Those 3 pages came out in twenty minutes, and the whole script didn't take too long. But I am not a writer, so the more I write, the more I learn about the process and about what matters and what doesn't. In terms of speaking directly to camera, it came naturally - I never questioned it.
  4. 4 Can you tell us a bit about your Nana?
I will just say that Wally is inspired by someone who is very close to me, and I will also say that there are a couple of lines in the script that I can't take full credit for. Probably the best ones.
  5. 5 What was your biggest challenge on this shoot and how did you get through it?
It was an expensive idea to pull off with little money. The generosity and talent of everyone else involved in making the short is what made this happen. I got really lucky.
  6. 6 What's next?
I just finished my second short Afternoon Delight that will screen at HollyShorts in August and on Short of The Week (date TBD). Can't wait to start making my next one!
