The Ten-Day Interview

6 questions with Allergic to Flowers director, Taichi Erskine at the half-way mark.
Sunday, May 21st, 2017
  1. 1 Hi Taichi! Thanks for being a part of our festival. First, what was the initial seed that inspired you to make Allergic To Flowers?
My good friend Daniel Sukara had an idea for a feature and I thought it might be fun to condense it into a short, and to see if we could secure funding for it as a feature or web series.
  2. 2 The script was written by Daniel Sukara. How did you come across Daniel's script and what was it about it that made you want to direct it?
Dan and I have been friends since high school and have collaborated on numerous projects. I really loved the dialogue between the two leads and knew with the right actors we could deliver a fun experience for the audience. I also thought the concept of out-of-work millenials trying to get their act together after college would resonate with our target viewers.
  3. 3 The two leads (Sophie Simpson & Nick Clark) do a great job and have wonderful chemistry together. How did you find them and what was it like working together?
I've worked with both Nick and Sophie before, they have a natural chemistry that I knew would come across on-screen. Working with them was both fun and easy.
  4. 4 What's the film that made you want to become a filmmaker?
    The Usual Suspects.
  5. 5 What was your biggest challenge making this film and how did get through it?
Probably the biggest challenge was filming the scenes in the van. We didn't have a permit and had to drive around Pasadena with a car mount attached. I think it was most challenging for Nick as he had to act while driving.
  6. 6 What's next?
DeSoto Picture Company has a slew of feature films as well as music videos in the works. Only time will tell!
