The Ten-Day Interview

5 questions with Flat 6b director, Andrew Niblo at the half-way mark.

  1. 1 Hey Andrew! Thanks for being a part of our festival. First, what inspired you to make Flat 6b?
Hi Fandependent! Thanks for inviting us! Flat 6b is an experiment in tension. We really wanted to build an atmosphere and do our best to creep people out. But the film is also about futility. So much of modern life is about submission to rules you didn't make and if you don't follow them, you're kind of screwed.
  2. 2 You made a feature back in 2011 and now you've done a short. I'm curious why you decided to do a short after your feature?
It was a long time between the feature and 6b, so I was completely out of practice. Also, it takes a long time to write a feature, you can move quicker on a short. The other great thing is that you can attract quality filmmakers to the project because the production period is much smaller.
  3. 3 What are the strengths of a short film in your opinion?
I think visually it's very strong. Dave Bird did a brilliant job as did Finlay Reid with the sound design. Between them they gave the apartment real character. Tom Hannay wrote a lovely score and Bianca was the perfect Julia. She's really engaging and sells it fantastically.
  4. 4 This feels like it could be a part of a larger story. Do you have any plans to turn this into a larger short or a feature?
I think the idea could sustain a feature, but there would need to be more elements if the whole thing were to play out in one space. It might be fun to devise the script alongside a performer.
  5. 5 What's next?
To write more, shoot more and build momentum.
